From the Mouth of Babes: Justification and “Goodification”

The other day as I was teaching the children about the difference between justification, sanctification and glorification, Stephen (then 4) said the cutest thing. I was explaining that there are three senses to salvation or deliverance. For the Christian, there is a past tense to salvation, a present tense and a future tense (the completed salvation).
1) In justification God delivered us from the penalty of sin (eternal death).

2) In sanctification God is delivering us from the power of sin (by making us more holy).

3) In glorification God will deliver us from the very presence of sin (in Heaven).

During this conversation, as we talked about God imputing (or reckoning) Jesus’ righteousness to us in justification, Stephen asked, “What about goodification?” I was startled, but managed to ask him what that was. He answered, “When do we get Jesus goodness?” “Ah” I answered. “That would be in justification. We get Christ’s goodness or perfectness or righteousness when we repent of our sins and trust in Christ alone for salvation. So basically justification and goodification are the same thing.”

It was such a blessing to see he understood that we need Christ’s goodness credited to us in order to be righteous in God’s eyes. So now we have a new theological term “goodification”. When God imputes Christ’s goodness to our account based on the work of the cross and through the instrument of faith in Him. Maybe I should submit this to Wayne Grudem for the next edition of his “Systematic Theology”? :-)

Gracie sings “Jesus Loves Me”

This was during our “Bible Time” when we sang a number of hymns. There was a glitch in the middle because we were singing from two different hymnals.

Roller-skating and Evangelism

During our time on the Cincinnati waterfront, while we were sharing the gospel with folks, Grace and Stephen tried their first time at roller skating. It was a really neat outdoor roller rink (only problem was the ungodly music). Here’s a short video of them enjoying the beautiful day the Lord had made. Later Gracie was able to skate around the entire rink (while holding the outside wall, with the help of the Lord). Stephen couldn’t make it all the way around, but probably will in a few years.

Gracie on Witnessing to a “Doctor” on a House Call

Now this was really special. A few weeks ago a nurse came by our home to drop off some medical equipment. In the process, she had me sign a bunch of papers and even fill out a survey. One of the questions was something like, “Have you ever had heart problems?” This made me laugh because it sounded like, “Have you ever told a lie?” and I thought, “Ok, somehow I’ve got to turn this around and have her take a spiritual survey.” But the great thing was that Grace and Stephen were drawing in the room with us and since they saw the questionnaire I was filling out they also started making some questionnaires complete with little yes and no check boxes. God totally set that up, it was too easy!! So at the end of the nurse’s presentation, I grabbed Grace’s “survey” and asked the nurse if I could have her take a spiritual survey, to which she happily agreed. So using the pretend survey which just had scribbling for words, but really did have two check boxes per question, I walked her through the law and the gospel. She was pretty surprised because I was reading scribbles, but she played along, though at times she was visibly uncomfortable (while admitting she was a liar, thief and adulterer at heart). Listen to the below MP3 to hear Grace give the story. Please pray for this nurse, that the Lord would be pricking her conscience with the Word of Truth she heard. Thanks.

Grace’s Own Daily, Chronological Bible

Recently we gave Grace her own nice, pink “Girl’s Bible” that was in NASB.

Since the Lord had used Christy to teach Grace to read, we thought it was time for her to start reading the Bible every day on her own. We even bought a blue Boy’s NASB for Stephen for later. We figured that it would be good since it was a real word for word translation (the main one we as parents use) and just had a girly pink cover. However, once we opened it up we noticed that there were ‘devotions’ for young girls. Well that usually means trouble (since it’s basically adding man’s word to God’s word). Sure enough, the ‘devotions’ were worldly and tainted the meaning of Scripture. It seems they were written with a worldly-wise young ‘tweener’ in mind. In other words, they were assuming girls already had bad attitudes, independent spirits, despised parents and siblings, etc. So even though we had already given the Bible to Grace (bad decision before reviewing it thoroughly), and she was so excited about it, we had to tell her that we’d take it away and get her a better Bible.

Praise the Lord, someone GAVE us this new Bible called “Day by Day Kid’s Bible“.

Christy received it through “Paperback Swap“. This time we thoroughly read through it and checked it out. There are NO “devotions”, worldly or otherwise. Now, interestingly it’s not NASB, it’s its own translation made especially for readers on a 2nd grade reading level. So praise the Lord, Grace can read it all by her self (with the help of the Lord!). Another great thing about it is that it’s a daily Bible, in other words, it breaks up the entire Bible into portions with dates on it. So today she’s reading the portion for October 4th. Another neat feature of the Bible is that it is chronological, so David’s psalms are placed within the different accounts of his life, etc. Of course we’ve had other children’s Bibles, but they’re either in an adult translation which she would need help with reading many of the big words or they are simply story books that don’t give the entire Bible accounts of all the priestly duties, prophets, etc. Anyways, all this to tell you that Grace just LOVES her Bible. She reads so much that many days she is ahead of the ‘date’ she should be on, so we gave her a bookmark and she’s reading in two places now. Since we gave her the Bible in August, she just started right on that date, but now with her ‘extra’ reading she’s also reading in ‘January’ as well. Grace is learning so much from reading her Bible, it’s really exciting to watch. And now Christy is reading along with her in Christy’s daily, chronological Bible as well. So it’s a real joy. You can click on this picture to read more on the author’s website, it even has sample pages from the Bible. Highly recommended for 1st and 2nd graders. Please continue to pray for Grace “that the eyes of her heart may be enlightened, so that she will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” Eph 1:18

“Can We Go Preach the Gospel Again!?”

The highlight of my day occurred just as I woke up. Stephen came into the bedroom, jumped on the bed and asked, “Can we go preach the gospel again, Daddy?”. Then a few minutes later Grace bounded into the bedroom and asked the same question, almost verbatim. Praise the Lord! Of course I told them we could and would. By the way, click HERE to see one of the gospel tracts they enjoyed handing out.
