1Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 2I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: 3Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. 5For he stablished a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: 6That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children [grandchildren]: 7That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: 8And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God. 9The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. 10They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; 11And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them. Psalm 78:1-11
9Wherefore I will yet plead [Heb: riv also means to grapple, wrangle, strive, to contend] with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children [grandchildren] will I plead. . . . 11Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. . . . 13For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. Jeremiah. 2:9, 11, 13
As the verses above show, the Lord reminds parents that if they do not follow Him, their punishment will land upon not only their children, but also their grandchildren. The current generation of younger people is the grandchildren of the Hippies of the ‘60s. This is the generation that began eliminating God from education, movies, radio, T.V., liberalizing churches and seminaries, and then assumed the attitudes and actions that Man, not God, determines truth. Fifty years later, we now have a culture well into postmodern thinking, narcissism, and entitlement to the extreme that becoming a socialistic state no longer seems to bother Americans. How sad this July 4th to see how far (in just six months) our country has departed from the foundational beliefs our Founding Fathers fought and died to establish. Are the grandchildren of the Hippies now under judgment?
Our culture is changing from the roots upward. Tomorrow’s leaders are the young people who are in their early twenties and younger. The Barna Research Group calls this group the Mosaic Generation. These young people are currently rejecting Christ long before they reach college. Eclectic lifestyles, nonlinear thinking, fluid relationships, cut-and-paste values, personalized spirituality, open-minded attitudes (to things others want to believe as long as they are treated with the same “courtesy,”) along with technology-fueled expectations, characterize these young people. The Mosaics spend on average 8 ½ hours per day with various media sources, isolating them from fellowship and relationships with real people to the cold communication of one-on-one “fun” with un-caring, electronic devices. Seventy-six percent of the Mosaics embrace the idea that anything is okay if it works (the end justifies the means). (For more research on this generation to whom we need to be ministering read: http://enrichmentjournal.ag.org/200604/200604_028_MosaicGen.cfm.) Extrapolated out, the “if it works it is fine” idea means that if there are supposedly too many people, it is fine to kill them, whether through abortion, euthanasia, genocide, or outright killing. If everyone is just another cog on the evolutionary wheel then the culture sees death as something that should be embraced because it is purifying the race. Humans are no longer seen as created in the image of God with eternal worth and value (Genesis 2).
An interesting fact recently published in a Barna Report, states that of the current generation of older adults in America, one in nine still hold to a biblical worldview, but of those in the Mosaic generation only ½ of 1% embrace a biblical worldview. Barna defines a biblical worldview: “For the purposes of the survey, a ‘biblical worldview’ was defined as believing that absolute moral truth exists; the Bible is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches; Satan is considered to be a real being or force, not merely symbolic; a person cannot earn their way into Heaven by trying to be good or do good works; Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth; and God is the all-knowing, all-powerful creator of the world who still rules the universe today. In the research, anyone who held all of those beliefs was said to have a biblical worldview.” (For further research: http://www.barna.org/barna- pdate/article/21-transformation/252-barna-survey-examines-changes-in-worldview-among-christians-over-the-past-13-years)
We have recently read Ken Ham and Brit Beemer’s new book, Already Gone, and now carry it as a ministry resource. This is a must read book. It addresses where the current generation of young people is going. Already Gone is a result of a national scientific survey of 20-29 year-olds who no longer go to church but grew up in the church. The survey sought to find out why and although there were a number of reasons, the single biggest reason was that the church didn’t provide answers to defend their faith in this increasingly anti-biblical culture and the apologetic questions that dominated were tied to evolution and millions of years. The book shows too that we are not loosing most of the kids in college but in grade school-high school. Most of them were abandoning the faith in their minds at least, even if they were still going to church. Beemer and Ham’s study shows that children are now rejecting God starting in upper elementary school, with approximately 40% of junior high and then in high school another 44% of students rejecting Christianity even before they get to college, only approximately 11% of college students are now falling away from their spiritual moorings (there are so few left to fall away at this point!) Their study also showed that young people who never attended Sunday school test stronger on Bible questions than those who have grown up attending Sunday school. Why is this? The Bible is no longer taught as the authoritative Word of God and students are not given evidences for its authority and accuracy. They are taught Bible “stories” and conclusions and applications are not formulated and taught as TRUTH! These children, in essence, are being inoculated against the truth of God’s Word, instead of becoming equipped to go out into the secular humanistic battle that is facing them on every front.
Another survey group, the Nehemiah Institute is finding this same trend. The Nehemiah Institute, which also does worldview testing across different kinds of schools, has statistics from 1988-2009 demonstrating that both public and Christian school children are following the same downward trend in worldviews. The children in most Christian schools are currently able to correctly answer a meager 15% of the questions relating to the Christian worldview while only about 5% of those in the public schools, can answer questions on a test showing that they understand or hold to the Christian worldview. (This information can be obtained from http://www.nehemiahinstitute.com/peers.php.) Christian home schooled students and those specifically taught Worldview thinking are the only ones that are in the “Biblical Christian” category of this survey.
It has been an exciting last two months for all of us from the Ladies getting everything wrapped up at PCC and moved back home, to Jenna Dee’s purse getting stolen from the hotel breakfast table in Houston while we were all just sitting there! One of us even saw the thief walk away, but didn’t see the purse in his hand because of the high-backed chairs. Because we were on a trip, the purse had all her credit cards, Social Security and Medicare cards, checkbook, ministry checking account information, both of our cameras, the GPS, cell phone, van and car keys, house keys, and most importantly, the ministry datebook. (ALERT: No datebook = please re-confirm speaking dates.) We have been continually reminded of Romans 8:28—that God does work all things together for good. The Lord has given us several witnessing opportunities as we have been replacing things and working with different people on paperwork. Please pray for “Jose” a Muslim man we met at the cell phone store. He was open to hearing the Gospel. He took Jobe’s book and the animal & 4 part DVDs. We are praying the Lord will bring fruit from these materials. Taryn is helping Jobe begin more research on the next two Creation Proclaims DVDs along with working out a new and updated product brochure. Mirren is doing massive sorting, filing and cleaning and we are all trying to keep up with the house and lawn. Jobe is doing a b-day party for a special friend at the Heard Museum Sat., June 26th and Jenna Dee leaves for her 44th nursing reunion today (25th). Our guest house remains active, as do the chiggers! Please be aware that a new Christiano Film will be coming out in September: THE SECRETS OF JONATHAN SPERRY coming to theaters Sept 18th www.sperrymovie.com. The movie puts great emphasis on the importance of leaving a godly legacy and on passing on the baton of evangelism and discipleship.
